A North Carolina man accused of fatally beating his girlfriend’s son allegedly told first responders the boy died after choking on a waffle, according to multiple reports.
Michael Buchanan, 23, has been charged with child abuse resulting in serious physical harm and murder, according to Wake County jail records.
The boy’s mom called 911, and Buchanan told first responders the boy was eating waffles when he began choking on Feb. 14, the warrant states.
However, after medical personnel found that the back of Torrance’sskull was fractured, leading to bleeding on the brain,Buchanan was taken into custody and charged with injuring the toddler, according to the warrant and CBS17.

Two days later, Torrance succumbed to his injuries and authorities charged Buchanan with murder, WRAL and ABC11 report.
Torrance’s mother, Quise McCall, had recently moved from Washington, D.C. with her three children and Buchanan, WRAL reported earlier this month. McCall took to social media to share news of the incident.

“I kept saying and telling them something was going on, but I didn’t know what it was,” neighbor Shelley Jackson said, according to WRAL. “I’m just shocked. I just can’t believe it.”
“It’s very sad,” neighbor Glory Iluyomade said.
Buchanan remains behind bars with no bond at the Wake County Jail. Attorney information was not available Friday. Prosecutors could not be reached for comment.
