While on a plot drive in northerly Botswana , a matrimonial duo witness a dramatic tantrum involving a scout group of baboons fleeing from a large number of Leo the Lion . In November 2012 , while on a 16 - day photographic safari tripper in Botswana , photographerEvan SchillerandLisa Holzwarthspent four days near the banks of the eastern Selinda Spillway in the 320,000 acreSelinda Reserve of northerly Botswana . With their template , Isaac Seredile , they were witness to an sinful sequence of events — and they were kind enough to share their experience with me via electronic mail .

While out on safari , and after find some hyaena and a leopard , the trio dead hear a hoo-ha .
“ There was a troop of 30 - 40 baboons head in our general direction making a plenty of noise , ” they write . “ The baboons settled on another ‘ island ’ of trees a safe aloofness from the leopard . Isaac rapidly drive us to the scout group and said again , keep your eyes open , they are sounding the predator warning gadget . ”
Just as he said this , two lionesses came out of the tall grass and rush the baboon in the tree diagram , only to be joined by two more lioness .

“ Between the baboon shrieking and the lioness communicating with thick guttural roars , it was a mad scene , ” they write . “ The baboons were safe in the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree but dying about the lions clawing on the trunks . ” With all the crazy house , they suspected someone was rifle to mislay their cool and make a run for it — and that ’s exactly what happened .
Three baboons were focused on another Seth of trees a few hundred yards aside . Two made it , but a third was grabbed by a Leo the Lion as she tried to scale the tree .
And that ’s when they saw the baby .

“ As the third baboon put dying on the soil , we noticed a little baby — less than a month erstwhile — slowly disengage from its female parent ’s dying body , ” they said . “ Despite its vernal age , I was amazed to see how replete so quickly kvetch in that it immediately tried to find prophylactic in a tree . Unfortunately it did not know how to do this cursorily or quietly . While its instinct was good , it had n’t yet master upper or agility . ”
It was at this stop that the lionesses noticed the little one .
“ They were intrigued , but did not go for the ‘ kill ’ which would have take less than a nano - irregular if they had been so inclined . The babe and one of the lioness engaged in the African version of a big cat - and - shiner game which we have watch countless numbers of times with our own domestic bozo and their gimmick of shiner , groin and chipmunk . ”

Even and Lisa said the baby was leap up and down , screaming and off the lioness on her nose . She continued to gently criticize the baby off the base of the tree each time it seemed to make a petty bit of advance in its upright effort at escape .
“ The lioness then carry the baby in its sass ( really at that moment she could have withdraw it whole without a blink of an centre ) and put it down on the soil in front of her , ” they wrote .
“ What find next bollocks up our minds — the infant , in another instinctual second , obtain onto the lioness ’ chest and tried to suckle . Evan ’s pictures say it all . All the while , the Baboon leader was climbing up and down his tree , calling clamorously and making whatever noise he could to cark the lionesses . ”

“ The lioness was being as gentle as a 350 pound computerized axial tomography can be with a 3 or 4 pound baby baboon , ” they tell .
But the baby was now showing sign of physical harm and fatigue from the whole ordeal .
“ After allow the child to ‘ suckle ’ for a turn , the lioness again pick the babe up in her mouth — I was in suffering determine the baby ’s trial by ordeal — and kept on call on off the video option on my television camera because it was hard to immortalize . ”

abruptly , two male Leo approached . It ’s not clear if they were curious about the babe , though Evan and Lisa mistrust they were interested in “ checking - out ” the ladies . The lionesses made it clear they were n’t interested .
With the lioness interfering seek to guard off the amative advances of the Lion , a bountiful male baboon , who had been trying to no avail to rescue the baby , was now able-bodied to mount down the tree , grab the baby and then point back up to safety .
regrettably , he choose a dead tree and he soon felt the heat of the sun .

“ I was touched by how gently the Father Baboon take hold this little sister who was in tough shape after its trial by ordeal , ” they wrote . “ The baby ’s body appeared limp and we thought it had succumbed . Isaac told us that if that was the case , the Father would most likely still hold up the baby for a few day before finally letting go . ”
Eventually , the father baboon made his move .
“ Holding the baby , in all sorts of contort positions , he tried legion times to climb down the tree . He test the lionesses ’ interest with each descent . in the end , the combining of make bold courageousness and the lionesses own desire to take cover song in some shade allowed him to chance rubber and a little peace in a neighboring tree , ” they wrote .

So what happened to the baby ?
“ I care to think that the little guy wire survived with the help of his troop . He was active and dependable in his male parent ’s arms when we left and that ’s how I wish to remember it . No matter what , he remains an inspiration – and a admonisher , that life is slight , ” they read .
