Brent Christensen ’s Ice Castlescould be the oasis for an ice queen or the den for a race of wintery sprites . But they ’re actually man - made social structure , created by pouring water supply over an icicle structure . The results are towering architectural sculptures that seem pluck from a lieu of myth and caption and plop down in Minnesota and Colorado .
After building the structures with icicle , the Ice Castles team work on sprinkler in freezing temperatures , letting the castles grow over the base . Some of the anatomical structure have tunnels , allowing visitors to step inside an otherworldly realm of ice . At night , the structures are lit up , adding an extra touch of the affected to these forms .
