Cerf ’s spiel , the entirety of which is deserving readingin the NYT , boil down to this : human rights are thing fundamental to our wellbeing as humans . Things that tolerate us not only to come through , but to thrive as a species : clean water , not being raped , show our thoughts without reprisal . These right can be cheat in Edward Durell Stone , and would make as much sense 500 years ago as 500 years from now . Why ? They have nothing to do with technical school — though that does n’t mean tech ’s not part of the picture :
engineering is an enabler of rights , not a veracious itself … It is a mistake to position any particular engineering science in this exalted category , since over time we will cease up valuing the wrong things . For exemplar , at one meter if you did n’t have a cavalry it was heavy to make a keep . But the significant right in that case was the right to make a living , not the rightfield to a knight . Today , if I were granted a right to have a horse cavalry , I ’m not sure where I would put it .
This is spot on . The net is currently an indispensable part of enabling free speech — but it ’s not free speech itself . Someday , there will be no cyberspace , because we ’ll be using something better . So to look back and see that we once enshrined it on the same plane as life , familiarity , and the pursuit of a crew of nice things will be pretty embarrassing .
This does n’t mean give up on make the internet enceinte and accessible , aver Cerf :
amend the net is just one means , albeit an important one , by which to improve the human condition . It must be done with an appreciation for the civic and human right wing that merit protection – without pretending that access itself is such a right .
