raw episode of The Expanse are officially coming our way in December — and we now have a better mind of what to carry from the sci - fi show ’s quaternary time of year , its first after moving from Syfy to Amazon Prime . The first dawdler and clip from the unexampled seasonblew our creative thinker , but we pulled it together to assimilate even more detail directly from the cast and crew .
While previous season of The Expanse have focused on the stress between the resident of Earth , Mars , and the Belt — much of it enfold up in a mysterious alien substance anticipate the protomolecule — season four will receive the show exploring new territory , literally , as the characters head to Ilus ( also call in New Terra ) a newly colonized globe - comparable satellite . The panel kick off with everyone agreeing they were both dismayed and stoke as blaze when they constitute out thatAmazon would be saving the former Syfy showfrom an early grave . The chumminess on stage spoke to one of the reasons why the show has resonated so much with fan : Everyone involved seems to really love making it .
“ We sleep with being together , and we ’re dedicated to play you a show that speaks for humanness , that represents you in a manner that peradventure you do n’t feel represented [ elsewhere ] , and so we sense a duty . Afterthe first clip from season fourwas shown as part of the panel , Franck pointed out that it ’s the first time the Roci has ever landed on a major planet . “ It was a big good deal because we had to sort of redesign the ship , we had to add those landing place struts that add up down . And all the material with [ Tipper ’s part ] show all the brutal forcible things that a Belter has to go through to train their body for that , Dom was super attached to it , and we got to show a side of Belter life sentence that we had n’t take care before . ”
When asked about what it was like adapting his record series for TV , in a interrogation that not - so - subtly referencedthe controversy over how the end of Game of Thrones was handled , Franck also bring up the disembodied spirit of dedication . “ Daniel and I have always had this rule write this books , and it ’s true [ in the writers ’ room for the series ] : the best idea win , the only thing that matters is that we make a matter that ’s undecomposed , and everyone has that committal . So you do n’t have a lot of fighting about whose idea should gain , people indicate for their edition . Everyone ’s interlingual rendition is the same , and it ’s the best one . ”
Shankar added : “ Ty and Daniel have also never been treasured about thing . They ’re willing to change chronology , we ’ve folded character arcs into different fictitious character , we ’ve moved things around and draw out storylines forward . I imagine it ’s a unique part of the adaptation process in this particular case . ”
They’ve been through a lot, but yes—Holden and Naomi are still a couple.
For illustration , Bobbie Draper — the tough Martian Marine played by Adams — isn’t in Cibola Burn , the fourth Expanse Word . But she ’ll still be in the fourth time of year . “ Bobbie ’s not in book four at all , ” Adams said at the press roundtable . “ So the writers had the challenge of putting me in a story that had n’t been spell . But it was also really exciting for them , because they could sheer off and you get to see more of Bobbie the human as controvert to the Marine in this season , and I really enjoy doing it . ”
None of the actors could divulge too much about what lie in ahead for their type , but Anvar , who play Roci pilot Alex , said “ there ’s a very nice phylogeny between [ Alex and Naomi ] that has to do with the huge work shift that we ’re taking going to the planet . ” Added Tipper , “ Also the Roci crew , broadly , it ’s kind of the first time you ’ve seen them really as a family , and kind of settle in who they are and their sexual relation to each other … we start off with them in this lovely class moral force that we really have n’t see before . ” Emphasis on the “ offset , ” she tot up with a chuckle , “ because you know it ’s gon na go downhill , basically ! ”
The writers and showrunner also play it close to the vest with time of year four detail . “ We ’re in reality occupy a character that we did not include in an earlier season for the show that ’s in the rule book for that time of year , ” Franck teased . “ Because we did n’t expend them , we suddenly realized that they were still usable , so now we ’re pulling that fictitious character into this time of year . ”
Actor Wes Chatham, who plays Roci mechanic Amos, said that season four will reveal more about his character’s past and inner life.
“ It ’s the first time that we ’ve pulled anybody from the past , ” Abraham added .
“ The book readers will be very excited when this case shows up , because they think we forgot about them , ” Franck say .

One of season four ’s unexampled characters that fans already jazz was come — Murtry , play by Torchwood ’s Burn Gorman)—can be glimpsed prominently in the season four poke , but even then , the trio did n’t want to share many item about him .
“ That part has a perspective , and one of the things we like doing in the show is not having anybody in there who is just evil for the sake of being evil . Everyone who ’s in battle is there because they suppose they ’re doing the right affair , ” Abraham say . “ That ’s not go to be any different break forward . ”

New characters , new struggle , and — according to Strait , who plays Roci captain Holden , season four will have a different tone , too . “ Anyone familiar with the Holy Writ sleep with that book four is kind of a gear alteration . It has a very unlike flavor to it . We approached that on a technical level with lens change , we have anamorphic lense that are kind of wide filmdom . It ’s draw that frontier look to it , ” he say .
“ But also , there is a form of gritty familiarity that you receive with the folks on the Roci crew and the the great unwashed on New Terra / Ilus , whatever you ’d like to call it , ” he continued . “ You move into this vast and different space , and yet you kind of delve deeply into each graphic symbol as well — which is a will to the leger and also to the adjustment and the writing , because they negociate to do both . The world does get much larger , and yet it also gets far more familiar at the same time . ”
