Earlier this year , Dungeons & Dragons released the supplemental lorebook / bestiary , Bigby Presents : Glory of the Giants . Fans were spry to point out that some of the instance look … off . After answering some doubtfulness on X / Twitter , artist Ilya Shkipin explain that yes , he did usegenerative AIto attend to his illustration , saying that heused a programto add “ detail ” and “ polish ” to his body of work .

A lot was made of the giants that Shkipin drew , but other the great unwashed spotted a very rickety dinosaur in the bestiary of the Scripture . The Altisaur was one of the illustrations that looked like a in particular egregious exercise of AI artistic creation . It had strange artifact , odd blueprint , vestigal limbs , and ill rendered texture , with very lilliputian definable muscle system .

you could se the clear similarities to the conception art , as it show below . While many of Shkipin ’s other works were prove to have been demonstrably build through his own graphics process first , three of the four dinosaurs that were exchange ( Altisaur , Ceratops , and Regisaur ) antecedently had extreme law of similarity to the conception artwork . Again , most flagrant is the Altisaur , which looks like it was simply invert and cast through a generator that turned it into AI soup .

io9 reach out to Dungeons & Dragons via a press representative to see if they know the exact methods that Shkipin used to make his illustration beyond “ enhanced by AI , ” as account in the now - cancel tweet . io9 has further asked for specific clarity around their new policies that will prevent artists from using AI in the future . They direct io9 to theAugust updateand did not provide additional comment . Ilya Shkipin also did not return our request for remark at the time of publishing .

According toWizards of the Coast , only study previously done by Shkipin had to be substitute to comply with the no - AI insurance policy . He is no longer listed in the course credit . Of the four dinosaur that were replaced , three are credited to Claudio Pozas and one to Quintin Gleim . Other artists that were task with replacing the AI generated work let in Linda Lithen ( Frost Giant Ice Shaper ) , Daneen Wilkerson ( Frostmourn ) , Daarken ( Maw of Yeenoghu ) , and Suzanne Helmigh ( Stalker of Baphomet ) .

AI - sire art is tricky because there are a pot of honourable and moral matter bond up in the library of data that has been used to train the algorithm . Most curriculum have not sought license or offered recompense to the artists who had their work scrap . Some contemporaneous programs — like Adobe ’s Modern AI generative filling tool , Firefly — do useethically sourced images . There ’s also an upshot of right of first publication ; very few AI fine art cases have made their way through the courts , and those that have seem to err on the side of protecting human - made art , rather than machine output .
