Our belated look at Warner Bros. and DC’sThe Batmanis here , and it re - introduces us to Robert Pattinson’sangry young vigilante , as well as shining a spotlight on a few more faces barely glimpsed in theoriginal poke from last class . But what other item can we uncover ? Let ’s take a close face .
The laggard opens with Gotham City PD engaging in a rain - soaked raid on a diner . Seems a bit much , but they are cops and they are in Gotham City , so what else should you expect ?
specially when it ’s revealed just who it is they ( and Jeffrey Wright ’s Jim Gordon , also briefly seen here ) are after in the dining compartment . If you ’ve been following Batman casting news then you ’ll recognize this as our first unmasked glimpse at Paul Dano , who is playingDC Comics ’ villain the Riddlerin the celluloid . For much of this trailer and the late one , his face was cover behind a tap - up mask , and his willingness to go along with the police force seems to suggest that the Riddler at least factor getting arrested into his mind game .

If you did n’t recognize Dano however , the dawdler much less subtly beats you over the head with the selective information that this is The Bad Guy by a quite immaculately presented question mark - stamped foam on his cup of coffee . congratulations to either the diner staff the Riddler instructed to do that with , or to Eddie Nigma himself . It ’s a little silly , but given the tone of what we ’ve fancy of The Batman so far , adopt a little of that comic book coterie happen upon a courteous balance .
Gordon light up the Bat - Signal , shine Bruce ’s chosen image into the ( still - rain - soaked ) Gotham skyline . “ Fear is a putz , ” Pattinson ’s Bruce narrates . “ When that light strike the sky , it ’s not just a call . It ’s a admonition , ” he threatens . All pretty standard Batman material , to be certain , but the way this young iteration of the theatrical role re - emphasizes what a menace he is to the hoi polloi he ’s going after is on the face of it a big part of the later Bruce Wayne , who , it can not be stated enough , is really , really quite huffy at the country of the universe he finds himself in . Dead parents’ll do that to you .
Speaking of Batman , it ’s cut here to make it seem like Bruce has just been … moping about wait for the Bat - sign to come in . The first trailer for the film established pretty clearly that this Batman has been form with Gordon and the GCPD at least long enough that people are n’t surprised when a dude dressed in Bat - theme armor shows up at a crime scene . Considering that law-breaking scene in the first trailer saw Riddler impart a puzzle explicitly for Batman , all this seems to splice into the baddie getting himself “ caught ” as a way to get some alone time with the Dark Knight .

Batman ’s threat conclude as we see an expanded version of the brutal scrap panorama between him and a work party of clown - paint - wearing thugs , an obvious hint at the long shadow of the Joker . Who probably is n’t in this movie , take the direction we get on the Riddler and the Penguin later on , but , Batman moving-picture show do like to cue you that the Clown Prince of Crime is always ambuscade in the distance . Also found here , briefly , is that Bruce ’s snazzy courtship can definitely take a few gunfire . g , once again , I question why .
Once again , Riddler ’s unmasked facial expression is cleverly obscured from us as a GCPD interview elbow room rear a blind to permit Batman come face to look with the criminal . “ I ’ve been examine to reach you , ” Riddler whispering , as Bruce explodes , smashing the window and screaming “ What have you done ! ? ” at him . presumptively , whenever this occurs in the film Batman and Riddler have been chasing each other for a bit , but still , the former ’s unfitness to control his emotions is something constantly reinforced throughout this trailer .
Speaking of blowup , here ’s our first of many , as a construction somewhere in Gotham gets engulfed in flame . “ This is a powder keg , and Riddler ’s the match , ” Batman warn .

We prune to Bruce himself for the first time out of the Batsuit in this trailer , outside of what looks like the funeral for Don Mitchell Jr. , Gotham ’s mayor , whose slaying scene we saw Batman visit with Jim Gordon in the first house trailer . Riddler ’s interest with the cleanup suggest that the political hullabaloo of Gotham is go to be an important undercurrent in the movie , given the connector there to a character we have intercourse basically nothing about in the movie yet : Bella Reál , being played by Jayme Lawson , who is “ a grassroots political campaigner running for office in Gotham ” according to io9 ’s former sourcing . Bruce looks over as a knee - mellow - boot foot slinks out of a car . Set pictures from these scenes revealed that this is , of course , ZoëKravitz ’ Selina Kyle …
We edit out to a abbreviated chronological sequence of Batman and Catwoman have airless to each other on a sunstruck rooftop . “ I can take tending of myself , ” Selina purrs as she strokes Batman ’s thorax .
Ample grounds of which we get in a abbreviated montage of Selina doing all her Catwoman thing : beating up fellow , riding bike , disguising herself with a wigging or two . And we ’ll get more of that later in the preview .

“ If this continue , it wo n’t be long before you have nothing left ” warnsAndy Serkis’Alfred Pennyworth , as we thin out across a trio of interesting shots : Colin Farrell’sOswald Cobblepot , a.k.a . The Penguin , looking out across the Gotham sunrise , Alfred himself in our first actual look at the type , and Bruce , drape in shades , as he reads a newspaper publisher , which you’re able to just about make out has a newspaper headline about Mayor Mitchell ’s demise .
Speaking of , Bruce eschews a more distinctive whiteboard or notepad to just hang up out shirtless and write his own detective mind map in spray blusher . The five spokes here are interesting : three are murders , it would seem , as one of them is Mayor Mitchell ’s name , joining Colson ( Peter Saarsgard ’s character , a District Attorney ) and Savage ( presumably no coition toDC Comics villain , Vandal Savage , who is infamously rather hard to kill ) . “ Renewal is a Trygve Lie ” is interesting , and presumptively relates to Mayor Mitchell ’s re - election campaign , debate newspaper reports were paint with the discussion “ Lies ” by the Riddler at the mayor ’s murder scenery . But perhaps most interesting of all is the last talk “ The Sins of my Father . ” Given Thomas Wayne ’s front in the Gotham social elite before his last , connecting him into a political corruption scandal would be rather interesting — and far from the first time a reading of the Bat - mythos has assay to take the death of the Waynes and turninto something morethan just a random mugging get wrong .
“ I do n’t care what happens to me , ” Bruce enunciate , presumably to Alfred — note he ’s still got his Batman makeup on , here , but is n’t in reality in the suit . Perhaps a flashback to his early days of try out to become a vigilante , or something else ?

“ It ’s only going to get worse for you , ” Selina tells Batman , before , well , it now does . We firmly cut to Batman spring into a massive brawl with thugs in some sort of facility — presumptively , the Penguin ’s hood , as we see Bruce go to menace the criminal before he tells him to take it slow .
“ You ’re everything they say , ai n’t you , ” Penguin continues , as we prune to Selina loading a gun on her motorcycle , and a freestanding injection of her in a pink wig striding through a darkly get down party . We also see Batman fighting during said party , so perchance the facility is less industrial as it seemed a few moments ago but is just a club : more specifically , Penguin ’s iconic hideout from the comics , the Iceberg Lounge .
“ Maybe we ’re not so unlike … who are you under there ? ” Selina read , as we ’re back on the sunlit rooftop we saw Catwoman and Batman on in the beginning — a conversation seemingly interrupted , as we also briefly see Catwoman leap off the rooftop as Batman brawls with someone .

Batman , regardless of embodiment , really does n’t wish guns . Really , really does n’t care them .
After a repeat of his vengeance line from the first trailer and a few stab of thenew Batmobileroaring into action , we get an interesting crack of multiple Gotham cops trying to apprehend someone as they jump off from a very improbable edifice in a gliding suit . Odds are that this could be Batman , and not just because it ’s the kind of thing he typically does . In the first laggard , we did see Batman scuffle with the law in their offices ( presumptively after the Riddler interrogation we saw earlier ) , and escape from them by ziplining up a precariously high turbinate stairway . This could , mayhap , be the top of a suitably very big and very gothic GCPD building , could n’t it ?
Smash cut to a massive parking brake service presence outside the building Mayor Mitchell ’s funeral was taking place in , this clock time at Nox . We get a shot of Batman , caked in dirt , that ’s meant to count like he ’s expect up at the helicopter we just saw scan the shot , but it ’s hard to say if that ’s just the prevue or really in the picture show itself .

“ What ’s black and blue , and dead all over ? ” The Riddler teases , as we cut through a few more shots : a crowd watching a message from the Riddler ( simply discover as a serial killer ) on the local news , Selina watching in repulsion as Batman wail on someone , and Jim Gordon holding his gun up at Mitchell ’s funeral — presumptively at the bomb - strap driver we saw smash into say funeral in the first trailer .
A few more short shots : Batman leading what is likely a gang of GCPD officeholder into a waterlogged area with a flare , another less - than - cryptic subject matter from The Riddler ( “ I ’ll see you in hell ” ) , Batman being blasted back during the bomb threat at Mayor Mitchell ’s funeral , and both Alfred and Selina depend horrified at something . presumptively , Bruce related , because that ’s what he ’s ripe at , making masses who care about him worried all the time .
The trailer concludes with an lengthy tone at the car chase between the Penguin and the Batmobile we got a glimpse of in the first house trailer . Penguin thinks he ’s blown the Batmobile up , only to be at once prove wrong when it add up bang out of fire and smoke and into the back of his car , upending it …

… will us with a very cool shot of a very angry Batman condescend on his quarry .
While our latest looking at The Batman render us plenty of fire and fury , from all the explosions to a thrill of Bat - Cat vigor from our spark advance heroes , it ’s mostly an iterative look of what to wait from Matt Reeves ’ spin in Gotham City after last year ’s DC Fandome reveal , rather than something with a whole flock of newness to it . We get to see more of what we love was coming : Paul Dano ’s mysterious Riddler , Zoë Kravitz ’s Catwoman getting close to Pattinson ’s rage - occupy Batman , and more heavily make - up - clad Colin Farrell than anyone would do it what to do with . But it at least reinforces the tint and idea that Warner Bros. is fail with in this latest cinematic Batman : dark , youthful , and tortured in just enough of a way that hopefully , it will countenance the Dark Knight stand out from hiscinematic predecessorslurking in the shadows .
The Batman is set to hit theaters March 4 , 2022 .
