Setting foot on the moon for the first time was perhaps one of the biggest technical , scientific and political achievements of our geezerhood . So what ripe means to lionize , after exploring that new lunar landscape painting , than with bacon ?
After jump around in low gravity , train photographs , and mutter about low step and giant leaps , Neil Armstrong and “ Buzz ” Aldrin posture down to a meal of Baron Verulam cubes , according toAmy Shira Teitelon herVintage Spaceblog . She explains :
[ B]acon block were among the meals stored in the lunar module . And it worked out that meal A , the first scheduled repast to be eaten on the Moon , consisted of Roger Bacon squares , peaches , gelt biscuit cubes , pineapple plant grapefruit drink and coffee . They consume story ’s first repast on Moon somewhat in front of schedule after land at the Sea of Tranquility .

It was n’t , however , a particularly rare dainty for the pair . It turns out that , like any sound U.S. organization , NASA has somewhat of a love function with bacon . Breakfast often feature bacon squares in blank space , and apparently Canadian Bacon and codswallop is a picky astronaut favorite .
Indeed , during the Apollo 7 mission , astronaut Walt Cunningham once commented to Bill Pogue during breakfast that “ Happiness is a package of Francis Bacon square on day 10 . ” Amen . [ PopSciviaSmithsonian ]
