Last night ’s No Ordinary Family found the Powells chasing after some stolen super - serum , fight down a of a sudden superpowered ne’er - do - well , and get by with confirmative damage … while also revealing just how unsettling a supervillain can be when he commence feel some fatherlike passion .
Before we get into the rest of this episode , I present my favorite matter about last Nox ’s episode , and often the series in worldwide : Stephen Collins ’s more and more cark public presentation as the nefarious Dr. King , who often seem to put so much effort into maintaining his kindhearted exterior that he forgets to be malevolent . Collins was in peculiarly fine form in last nighttime ’s episode , give a monumentally creepy toast at Joshua and Katie ’s engagement political party , complete with gobs of perverted talking about how Joshua is really his Word . If nothing else , Dr. King ’s weird little wave is worth the toll of admission price .
Anyway , in last calendar week ’s recap , I offered a damning viewof not so much that exceptional sequence – which was actually comely enough – but of the show as a whole . This show has taken lots of steps in the proper direction , but only because it undoes all its advance so many prison term that there ’s always room for a fresh bout of betterment .

As a regular viewer of this show and someone who actually would quite like it to be in effect , this constant round of amelioration and re - crappening ( that ’s a technological term ) is immensely frustrating , and more than a little draining . It means I expend every episode now patiently waiting for the other horseshoe to throw off , not because I want to see it relapse but because that ’s all this show has ever usher itself to be equal to of .
Well , I ’m glad to say that “ No average Proposal ” kept up and improved upon the quality of last hebdomad ’s episode , offer some more amusement and extend mythology without making the characters too headless . Briefly , Joshua proposes to Katie , and the Powells cast an engagement party … where somebody steal the super - blood serum . It turn out to be Daphne ’s boyfriend Chris , who gives it to his paraplegic dad Ray ( Anthony Michael Hall ) in the hopes of allowing him to walk again .
The blood serum work all too well , attain Chris ’s dad first-rate - strong , which gives him the brilliant thought of smashing asynchronous transfer mode for cash . Jim goes after him , but Ray is even stiff than he is , and a recent accident that give a bystander with a bullet in his chest has Jim afraid to risk any more confirmatory harm . Since this is still No Ordinary Family , there ’s plenty here that did n’t really work . The whole occupation about an innocent bystander being accidentally wound by Jim ’s offense - scrap was so silly and poorly developed that I imagine even the episode kept bury about it — at least until the totally derisory Revelation of Saint John the Divine that Jim ’s bend smoke unearthed a tumor in the victim , which means the bullet in reality saved his life .
Also , I might have liked a lilliputian more thematic weight behind Anthony Michael Hall ’s villainy – it seemed like there was room to work around with some potentially interesting ideas as an wild , recoup alcohol-dependent paraplegic got out of his wheelchair and went mightily back to a life of offense , but it just felt like a lot of clobber that happened . Oh , and I ’m not even getting into the fatuousness of J.J. ’s pedantic decathlon subplot , because the phrase “ J.J. ’s donnish decathlon subplot ” should state you everything you ask to screw .
But yes , there was a lot that work well here . It ’s assume a fiddling while , but Michael Chiklis has last observe a rut with Jim and is impart some much - needed shadow to the fiber – for a second , I really thought he was adequate to of punching Joshua ’s head off .
