Mark Coleran , creator of “ fantasy drug user interfaces”for films like The Bourne Ultimatum and Children of Men , is now focusing on work real - mankind job . John Pavlus withFast Company Designexplains .
The Designer Who Creates the User Interfaces of the hereafter
You do n’t knowMark Coleran‘s name , but you ’ve consider his body of work . He ’s the designer who creates the futuristic electronic computer screen that persona in movies ( like The Bourne Ultimatum , Children of Men , and Mission Impossible 3 ) use when saying things like “ Enhance ! ” But now he ’s the design director of Bonfire Labs , an agencywho specifically charter him for his “ fantasy exploiter user interface ” ( or FUI ) science .

But what on earth do flashy moving picture UIs have to do with solving real - world design problems ? Plenty , says Coleran : “ [ The FUIs ] look fantastic when you see them in the dramatic art , but a lot of that is actually strand in realness — stuff that ’s not mainstream yet , that I ’ve been researching and experiment with . ” Case in point : Coleran ’s design for a near - future tense music instrumentalist in Children of Men await uncannily like to iTunes ’s “ Coverflow ” port , which add up out nine months later .

But Coleran does n’t just throw out the rule Quran on user experience and“human interface guidelines . ”In fact , because many of his clients know his movie work , he drop a lot of sentence talking them out of doing something like Children of Men or The Bourne Ultimatum . “ One of my biggest frustations is when people will say , ‘ We have these specifications and requirements , now execute it just like we saw in the movie , ' ” he say . “ What they do n’t realize is that the requirement for those movie FUIs were totally unlike the unity that they ’re dealing with . In a movie , you see an interface for at most a couple of seconds . In real life story , every design decision has a consequence , and it does n’t go aside . It ’s there day in and day out . Those human port rule of thumb are there for very good reason . ”

So how do you drive the UI envelope while respecting what already works ? “ It amount back to pure design , ” Coleran says . “ Everything has to be justified ; you ca n’t say I put this here because it looks cool . At Bonfire we ’re trying to come up with Modern patterns — not just exploiter interfaces , but whole new model for experiencing TV or clip or music — and mocking them up in the same style I did the FUIs . But now , I may actually get to execute them in real lifetime . ”
