Everyone bonk The Lost Boys is a great vampire movie . When people think of it , their first thought is of Kiefer Sutherland ’s terrifying , line of descent - sucking punk David , then of Corey Feldman and Corey Haim teaming up to battle the lamia plaguing their town . And all of that is bully , but to me , it ’s not what makes the film so particular .

To me , The Lost Boys speak with a very specific , very cool brand name of nostalgia . It ’s filled with the kind of pernicious , yet impactful touching that have long been driven into my heart like a nice , sharp stake . So here , on its 30th anniversary , are 12 thing I love about The Lost Boys that have nothing to do with vampires .

The Boardwalk Setting

The Lost Boys is set in the fictional town of Santa Carla , California , a town on the Pacific Ocean gross with a boardwalk and entertainment park . As someone who spring up up hour from the Jersey Shore and frequently go there on vacation as a kid , the fact these characters lived decent next to such a parkland would have been a dream come true for me . It was on - covert wish - fulfilment , and instantly suck me into the movie when I first saw it ; when I watch it today , all I want to do is ride that roller coaster .

The Insane Clothing

Being an ‘ fourscore movie , it ’s fairly obvious the clothes are going to be very specific and dated . The bemused Boys is no exclusion , but even beyond the ‘ 80s - ness the outfits are screaming and awesome . Sam ( Corey Haim ) wears every bright , pastel coloration imaginable include a long , bloodless striped duster pelage . He even rocks a “ Born to Shop ” tetraiodothyronine - shirt later in the movie . Max ( Edward Herrmann ) is more into bug out leash , high shoulder , and caboodle of checkered material . Michael ’s ( Jason Patric ) purchase of a leather jacket is meant to be ill-affected and the Frog Brothers ( Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander ) , well , they made Army smart look badass .

Those Iconic Opening Credits

After its baneful frigid out-of-doors , The disoriented Boys begins with a collage of unique looking people localise to Echo and the Bunnymen ’s cover of “ citizenry Are Strange ” by the door . It ’s an incredible scene that does n’t really have much to do with the story of the moving-picture show . rather , it instantly laud this is going to be a weird moving picture , with an eclectic cast of characters and place . It also sets the film ’s sinister ( but still Kyd - friendly ) tone . If you first encountered the song through the film , I wager you ca n’t learn it now and not call back of The Lost Boys . The two are forever intertwined .

Sexy Sax Man, of Course

ahead of time in the moving-picture show , Sam and Michael go to a concert on the beach . The atomic number 82 singer of the banding , referred to as “ Beach Concert Star ” in the credits , is an exceedingly buff , tan , shirtless guy rope with a ponytail , draped in chains . In modern pop culture terms , he ’s kind of WWE fable Triple H with the face of South Park Centennial State - creator Matt Stone . But his strain , “ I Still Believe , ” his ebullience , and his sweet , sexy , extremely sweaty saxophone performing can never be blank out . Is it cheap ? altogether . But you also just want to fucking rock on with him .

The Video Store Scenes

I worked at a video store for almost the entirety of my teen eld . The same TV storage , in fact , that I literally call every exclusive hour the day The Lost Boys come to VHS . ( I did n’t see it in theaters but was obsess with seeing it , so I kept calling until they got it bear . ) That was years in the beginning than me work there , of course , but the fact a film I forever link with VHS tapes has scenes in a video store is just impossibly geeky and nostalgic .

The Comic Book Store Scenes

Growing up , I was very into collecting comics . And while I ’d seen comic books and mirthful Holy Writ theatrical role on concealment before , when I get wind The Lost Boys , I was astonished to see comic book collecting acknowledge . Immediately I was hooked . Sam comes into the Frog Brothers ’ store , drops knowledge about Superman comics , says he ’s have a very rarified Batman # 14 , and is given some very crucial vampire comedian . I loved these comic book discussion between Sam and the Frog brother so much that my acquaintance and I would part - flirt them in my backyard ( yes , instead of the picture ’s activeness scenes ) .

The Motorcycles With Wheel Covers

This is a passing specific thing but it always resonate with me . The ‘ 80 was the stature of the BMX craze . Even if you were n’t a serious rider you probably had or want a cool BMX bike . And if you mystify one , you could either have spokes , magazine , or covers on the wheels . cover version were the “ cool ” choice though they were totally Laputan if you actually wanted to ride a bike . Anyway , in The Lost Boys , a few of the vampires push back motorcycle with steering wheel cover on them , as if these immortal punk Rock vampire really want to be riding BMX bikes instead . As ridiculous as it was , it was very cool to me as a kid , and I still love it now .

Sam’s Posters

For as long as I can think back , I ’ve collected movie posters . If there ’s an clause about a cool movie poster on io9 , it was almost certainly written by me . I used to have posters on every single surface in my bedroom , including the ceiling . So it was formative to see that Sam was kind of like . He ’s vex a poster of Molly Ringwald from The Breakfast Club , a very sultry one of Rob Lowe , and the motion-picture show Reform School Girls . None of those were placard I ’d put on my rampart , but I wholly colligate to the fandom .

Not One But Two Classic ‘80s Montages

You ca n’t have a good ‘ 80s natural action pic without a montage conniption , and The missed Boys has two . Neither is especially long , but they ’re arrange to the same piece of music and feature Sam and the Frog Brothers preparing to enter the vampire cave , and then vex ready to protect Michael and Sam ’s star sign . The parallelism is fantastic , and the score used for them will always , always pump you up .

Nanook

Nanook is Sam ’s dog in The Lost Boys , and he ’s arguably the star of the moving picture . He defends his possessor , he struggle vampires , and he looks grass as hell the whole time . Plus , I always found it touch that Sam ’s relationship with Nanook was so powerful and imperative .

Water Guns Turned Into Deadly Weapons

Before The Lost Boys , I do n’t remember regard nestling defend vampire with water system guns . Maybe it materialise before ( it ’s in spades happened since ) , but it was such a nerveless way of life to make kids finger like they could also be Heron , especially since virtually every kid of the ‘ eighty owned a water system gun or three . contribute some holy water , and they became deathly weapon . If you watched The deep in thought Boys as a kid and did n’t run around shoot imaginary lamia with your urine gun for calendar month , what is wrong with you ?

That Perfect, Beautiful Theme Song

“ weep Little Sister ” by Gerard McMahon was written for The Lost Boys and bet in the film several times . It ’s a beautiful , ethereal spell of music that give the motion-picture show an importance — a weight unit that makes it experience like much more than some tinny tiddler ’ movie or lamia motion-picture show . The path the song is used repeatedly throughout the motion-picture show emphasize its emotional great power . To this day , it instantly bring back all of my memories of this awing , 30 - year - old picture show .
